Sometimes, simply vacuuming your carpet is enough to get rid of fleas. Use a vacuum and go over your entire carpet, and don’t forget any rugs, too! When you’re done vacuuming, empty the contents into a sealed plastic bag and dispose of it outside right away.

Vacuum thoroughly and throw away the vacuum bag when you’re finished. Fleas are small, agile insects that live by feeding on the blood of animals.
Don’t assume the fleas are gone after a few bug bombs. When searching for fleas, you may also find something called "flea dirt." It's black and coarse, and if you put it on a moistened towel, it will turn red. Flea dirt is the blood that fleas expel as waste from their bodies. Cedar chips are available in your local pet or home-supply store.Make sure your pet isn't allergic to cedar. If your dog has an allergic reaction to the cedar—e.g., sneezing or swollen eyes—stop using the cedar chips. If fleas do bite you during an infestation, it will likely be around your ankles, or in folds of skin.
Your veterinarian will sell oral tablets that you can give your pet. These tablets attack the flea’s nervous system via the bloodstream and tissue of your dog or cat. While they kill all the fleas feeding on your pet, they do not prevent fleas.
You should do this a few times during the week at different times of day. In addition to cats and dogs, you should also remove any other pets from your home, such as birds or fish, if possible. Cover aquarium tanks and bird cages, as well as any water dishes or food bowls. Turn off any systems that support the pet's environment, such as aerators in fish tanks or heat rocks in reptile tanks. Most fleas will be killed within several hours, but it can take days for a topical medication to have full effect. Flea eggs are small but can be seen if you’re looking closely. A single adult female flea can produce up to 2,000 eggs in her lifetime. These eggs may be laid in your pet’s fur, deep in the carpet, or in tall grass. If your infestation is severe, you may need the help of a professional product or pest control company that offers a flea removal service.
